Bali to New York: Rebel Dnce

Rebel Dnce means power through art & celebration. Based in Bali Indonesia Rebel Dnce is an emerging line by designer Maikhanh Bertrand. I've conversed with Maikhanh for a while now online & finally got the opportunity to meet her last night. In town on a brief visit, Maikhanh held a unique trunk event at Gallery Bar in Manhattan to show her current S/S 10 collection along with a dope roster of other artists. After flipping through the lookbook beforehand I was eagerly enthused to browse the collection up close. Visibly influenced by the amazing Bali island, simple edge is how I would describe the collection. Soft gray  & yellow with different blends of silk,jersey,& linen makeup the majority of the line. Another aspect that I love, a few of the pieces are uniquely unisex. One of my fave pieces is the lace print silk jersey overall, exactly I'm sure you can envision in your head :). I can't wait to see what Maikhanh will unveil next season, i'm definitely watching this young lady!

1. Name/Alias: MaiKhanh

2.Where are you from/ Where do you currently live?: I was born to Vietnamese and French parents in New Orleans, LA. I live in Bali Indonesia but Marseilles, New York and Paris are also my homes.

3. Where did/do you go to school and your major?:I first studied art and architecture in Lyon and followed up with fashion design in Marseilles.

4. What is your Grind?: Right now, my Grind consists of designing REBELDNCE, an urban prêt-a-porter label; a little bit of styling, launching a magazine and hosting a trunk show in NYC dec 9th (gallery bar) with Princess of the Posse, Ill P, Amore and Mike Schreiber. 5. How did you get into what you're doing now?: Like I said, I first tried interior architecture before discovering that fashion was more suited for me. I created REBELDNCE determined to be independent creatively and to live passionately.

6. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?: As a kid I wanted to be a ballerina, an archeologist, an illustrator, a journalist and an empress.

7. What are some contributing factors that shaped the life you live now?: Key factors; travelling with my mom, falling for a man, having a family.

8. Any specific people that mentored or helped guide you to your current path?:My mom, my family and friends.

9. What motivates you?: Creativity, independence and love drive me.

10. Your favorite author and why?: Sorry to disappoint but I don’t have a favorite author. Last book I read though was The Wind Up Bird Chronicles by Murakami. It s wonderfully written and the plot is extraordinary.

11. What are 3 goals you want to achieve within the next year?: Have REBELDNCE sold in 8 stores, live between Bali, New York and Paris and keep teaching my daughter how beautiful our lives are.

12. One person that continuously inspires you and why?: My man, he inspires my happiness, strength and creativity.

13. 3 Indie fashion brands you love to rock?: Princess of the Posse, Patrik Rzepski and Illionaire

14. What annoys you the most?: People that talk and don’t follow through. It’s annoying and disappointing.

15. Your best quality?: I can admit when I’m wrong.

I've Found You: No.6 Clog Boots

Let me tell you, I've been searching for these boots since seeing them last May. I actually discovered them in a round about way via the Manhattan Vintage Show.  In May I attended the Manhattan Vintage Show and came across Karin Bereson & Morgan Yakus's booth for their No.6 Store, they had one of the most amazing spreads of vintage pieces. I was totally enthralled with everything I saw! I remember talking to Karin briefly and exchanging cards. When I got home I logged onto their site and voila found these beauties. Yeojin Bae The Disheveled Bun

I'm trying to decide if I'm more in love with the disheveled bun in Yeojin Bae's S/S10 collection or some of the looks. Well as much as I covet this hairstyle I don't see myself being able to tackle wearing it anytime soon, seeing that I have virtually NO HAIR :). Thankfully Bae's designs help subside my pain, oh so dramatic I know I know! Australian designers always seem to be  a bit ahead of the curve in fashion. As I took a quick look back on some her past collections it was very evident. It's super cold here in NJ/NYC, and these looks from Bae have me longing for any type of hot weather. I love the exaggerated draping in the jumpsuits and adore how she paired it with that amazing blazer, by far my fav look.  It's nice to see visible diversity throughout a collection as long as each piece is relevant.
